The biggest and most famous cycle tour in the world has been held since 1903, cutting a large, loop-shaped route through France over a three-week period. The US-American Lance Armstrong has won the race seven times, while Jaques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain each won it on five occasions. The first and, so far, only German winner was Jan Ullrich in 1997. On the Tour de France, Erik Zabel has so far won twelve day stages and six Green Jerseys as the highest points scorer as well as wearing the Yellow Jersey of the overall leader on two occasions in 1998 and 2002 for one day in each case. Alessandro Petacchi won four stages during the first week of the “Grand Boucle” in 2003.
