Stamina is defined as the body’s acquired resilience to tiredness when taking part in lengthy activities, such as cycling, for example. The basis of all progress in training is the biological adjustment of the body to a training stimulus, through so called super compensation". Stamina can essentially be split into aerobic basic stamina, i.e. the energy-delivering metabolic processes are carried out using oxygen, and anaerobic stamina, where the energy-delivering metabolic processes are carried out without the use of oxygen. Without possessing a sufficient level of basic fitness, developed in training, i.e. a good level of aerobic stamina – the level of anaerobic stamina needed when competing is not achievable. In addition, trained muscle converts energy much more effectively than untrained – overall, endurance sport has a positive effect on the ability of the body to perform. Just ten minutes of running, cycling, swimming or similar every day will initiate considerable adjustment processes in untrained people of all ages; before commencing with endurance training you should however consult your GP.A balanced and adequate diet generally provides amateur endurance athletes with sufficient minerals and nutrients. Nutritional concentrates and supplements are, therefore, not necessary."
