The air resistance is the prevalent resistance the rider has to face when riding on even territory. If a rider is directly behind another rider, the one in the front acts as a wind breaker. So, the power of the air resistance decreases for the rider at the rear. Therefore, the performance the rider has to bring up for the same speed diminishes up to 40 per cent. Furthermore, the rider's consumption of oxygen is lesser, which again has positive effects on his performance. Consequently, a rider cleverly taking advantage of the slipstream can save a lot of energy. Factors like speed, the distance to the rider in front, his size and position, as well as the wind conditions effect the extend of the reduction of the required performance. Yet as soon as it goes uphill, the slipstream effect doesn't play such an important role anymore.
