Flamme Rouge is the French term for the red triangular flag which hangs under the banderole, which marks the last kilometre of the race for racing cyclists and is also known as the “devil’s cloth”. Until 2005, cyclists who fell within the last kilometre were credited with the time of the group they had been cycling with up till then – now for safety reasons this zone has been extended to three kilometres before the finishing line.
