“Endorphin” is the abbreviated form of “endogenous morphines” and describes the body’s own opioids. Endorphins become active when nerve impulses are transmitted and processed. This activity takes place primarily in the spinal cord and brain, the control centres of the human body. Endorphins regulate sensations such as pain and hunger, are connected with the production of sex hormones and are often wrongly described in the vernacular as the “happy hormones” because the release of endorphins triggers euphoria. The messenger substance serotonin also works in a similar way to endorphin; bananas, pineapples, kiwis, raw peppers, ripe tomatoes, spelt, pulses, soya, nuts, dairy products, meat and fish all contain large quantities of serotonin’s precursor, tryptophane. The consumption of serotonin or tryptophane can be dangerous if it is not taken in the form of natural food stuffs but as a dietary supplement. The right combination of nutrition and sport is healthier and more advisable.
