In 1893, Henri Desgrange set the world’s first one hour cycling record – although the Frenchman may be better known as the founder of the Tour de France. In 1903, as a way of boosting sales of the sports magazine L’Auto-Velo (later L’Auto, then L’Equipe), chief editor Desgrange and his colleague Geo Lefevére breathed life into the “great circuit” – the first major stage race of its kind. Patron Desgrange headed the world’s largest cycling race until his death in 1940, a monument honouring his memory is to be found on the Galibier Pass in the Alps.
