The Cipressa is the penultimate hurdle for professional cyclists at the Milan-San Remo spring classic on the almost 300-km-long stretch from Milan to San Remo. The summit, 240 m above sea level, is reached after a climb of around 4 km and lies approximately 20 km before the day’s goal in the Ligurian metropolis of San Remo. After that, there is only one other ascent to speak of – to the legendary Poggio, whose flanks must be climbed approximately 10 km before the finishing line. Traditionalists can heave a sigh of relief: plans for a change of route with a somewhat more selective climb instead of the Cipressa were not taken up, at least not for 2006 – for previous winner Alessandro Petacchi, four-time winner Erik Zabel and the rest of the peloton, the “Primavera” on 18 March, will remain unchanged for the time being at least.
