Sweeper Bus
The sweeper bus – mostly a minibus – gathers up the riders that have had to drop out of the race due to injury, illness or exhaustion or that have fallen so far behind the rest of the field that they will no longer be able to finish the race within the time restriction. At the same time, their start number is taken from them. The sweeper bus, which is consequentially feared by cyclists is the last vehicle in the race, after which the street is open for public traffic again. The symbolic broom on the back of the bus sweeps the road free again.
