It is among the second “wave” of April classics and is one of the so called “Ardenne Classics” such as Liege-Bastogne-Liege or the “Wallonischen Pfeil, which run over numerous untarmaced roads. The race, which is sponsored by the Dutch brewery Amstel, has been held annually since 1966. In 2006, it will take place on April 16th. Since 2003, the finish of the race has been at the top of the steep Cauberg in Valkenburg, which is reached after around 250 km. The record winner of the “Amstel” is the Dutchman Jan Raas, who won five times between 1977 and 1982. Milram rider Erik Zabel has so far won once, in 2000. Olaf Ludwig won in 1992.
