Milan – Sanremo

Mountain finish
Milan – Sanremo is the year’s first important classic in spring. The race is carried out annually at the end of March. With a length of almost 300 kilometers it is the season’s longest one-day race. Milan – Sanremo, also called classicissima, took place for the first time in 1907. The course leads the riders from Milan in the north of Italy to San Remo at the Italian Riviera. The largest part of Milan – Sanremo’s course is quite even, yet with the Cipressa and the Poggio di Sanremo there are two climbs right before the finish. It is especially imporant not to miss contact during these climbs and to ride in a front position. For at the Poggio, it happened from time to time that some riders were able to surprise their competitors. The race is often decided in a bunch sprint on the home strech of 400 meters, the Via Roma. Therefore, it is especially favoured by the sprinters. It is also the favourite race of Team MILRAM’s sprint stars Erik Zabel and Alessandro Petacchi. Erik Zabel already won it four times, Alessandro Petacchi once.
