Pssst! The latest insider news: "Really done" - Sebastian Schwager about the Tour of Austria.

12/07/2024

Dear Team MILRAM fans,

I’m really done today. The stage over the Großglockner was quite tough, and I didn’t feel so well. But I arrived in the finish, that’s what matters. Except from today, I’m rather satisfied with my performance so far, I could do my work every day, and I nearly had my own result despite perparing the sprint once. But unfortunately I realised too late that we were so close to the finish. So I dropped back, Elia finished fourth and I rolled into the finish 13th. If I had pulled through, I probably could have finished in the top ten. It would have been nice to see that I can be in the finale as well, anyway, it doesn’t really matter.

The weather was really bad in the last days. Today, the temperatures were around the freezing point on the Großglockner at 2.500 meters. The streets were free, but on the left and right side there was snow, and it was even snowing a bit. But otherwise it was quite dry. For tomorrow, I hope I can hide a bit in the peloton to recover, so that I’m able to pull through again in the next days. Today, during the climb, I had a little hunger knock. I really felt bad, and everything seemed to pass me in slow motion. Luckily I realised it soon enough. 500 meter before the feeding zone our second team car passed me, and I asked for a bottle at once. When I started to drink I realised that the batteries were empty. If it tastes the better and you drink very fast, it’s high time for a snack. I ate and drank during the whole descent, then it was ok again. First I had warm tea, because it was so cold, then energy bars, bread, a gel, and then the stores were filled again.

Today, I have to cure myself first of all. It’s good that the race finishes quite early here, so we can watch the last 50 to 120 kilometers of the Tour. And we’re watching excitedly, of course. Except from yesterday, there was one of us in a top group every day so far, and then Ete’s second rank, that’s really exciting.

After the Tour of Austria I have nine days to relax, then I’m starting at the Tour of Saxony. I don’t know my programme after that, I’ll have to talk to our sport director Oscar about it first. I’d like to do the Deutschland-Tour, but first I have to see how I get through the other two tours and how the Tour-riders are feeling. My days off I’ll spend at home, where I’ll have to do some preparations for my wedding in October.

See you soon,

Sebi
