Dear Team Milram friend,
Up to now, the beginning of the season has been a big success for our newly founded Team Milram. We managed a total of six first places, seven second places and six third places in the first two months. It would be great if things go on that way. My primary sporting objectives are the ProTour and especially the Tour de France and the Deutschland Tour. Obviously other races matter too, such as Milan – San Remo or one or other of the spring classics. The atmosphere within the team is certainly a contributing factor too when it comes to the Team Milram’s superb results. That is great as far as I’m concerned.

Of course, there are a few differences in comparison to T-Mobile: T-Mobile is something like the Bavaria FC of the cycling world, claiming to be the biggest and most successful team with the largest number of wins. Conversely, our Team Milram is a newcomer on the ProTour scene. Nevertheless, the motivation is there, preferably to win races, to secure a place for ourselves up front and even show the big names a thing or two, ideally our rear wheels. The team has trained hard for this. Now I am observing the new approach which the Italians have brought to the team with great interest. How do they train? How do the Italians prepare for races? A number of things are completely new to me. I am trying to keep an open mind and not just say: we have always done things this way. The Italians’ training sessions are shorter but more intensive. Is less perhaps more sometimes? At the moment, we are working hard towards my favourite race, Milan – San Remo. I am really looking forward to it and think our team stands every chance.

In addition to innovative training, the Team Milram is trying to develop a “New Way of Cycling”. It involves attempting to get two fast people to start in one team in the Team Milram with Erik Zabel and Alessandro Petacchi. The idea is for them to ride not only alongside one another but with one another. It is as though Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich were to start in one team and try to win that way. That is exactly what we are trying now. If it works and two good racing cyclists complement one other, if that is the way to success, then it will show that the idea of trying out this new method was an intelligent one. The Giro della Provincia di Lucca on 6 March and Milan-San Remo on 18 March will be the first acid tests.

Yours Erik
