Fabian Wegmann fourth in south of Spain

Benahavis : 23/02/2010

Team MILRAM continues to shine in the Vuelta a Andalucia (February 21-25 / UCI 2.1). Allrounders Fabian Wegmann and Markus Fothen finished fourth and tenth in the third stage over 162.5 kilometers from Marbella to Benahavis for further Top Ten placings. The MILRAM duo thus rewarded the German ProTour team for its strong performance, doing much of the lead work on the day. MILRAM allrounder Wegmann finished in the mass sprint behind stage winner Oscar Freire (Rabobank), Grega Bole (Lampre) and Simon Gerrans (Team Sky). Spaniard Sergio Pardilla (Carmioora-NGC) continues to hold the overall lead. MILRAM's Markus Fothen is only 32 seconds down in 11th place.

„Right now we are all in good form and can make use of that,“ said MILRAM's Fabian Wegmann after the third stage. „About 30 kilometers before the finish, at the last ranked climb, we picked up the tempo and split the field. Unfortunately Oscar Freire had a puncture, so Rabobank couldn't continue to help our attack. So we were caught again. The finale was pretty hectic. Markus Fothen brought me perfectly into position on the climbing run-in. Unfortunately I was a moment too soon in the wind. Now we will pin our hopes on Markus' time trial abilities, since he is in striking distance on GC.“

Two escapees marked the third stage of the race through the south of Spain. Spaniard Gomez Marchante (Andalucia-CajaSur) got away on the sunny 20° Celsius day together with Brice Feillu (Vacansoliel) after only five kim. The duo led the peloton for a long time with a lead of up to four minutes, before MILRAM helped to organize the chase. The German ProTour team's efforts were rewarded, as the two escapees were caught again after being away 133 kilometers. In the slightly uphill finale it came to a sprint, in which Oscar Freire (Rabobank) repeated his victory from the day before.
