For big races, like the Tour de France, you have to have a daily intake of up to 10,000 kilocalories. What is the main food on your plate?
The problem with all the classic one-day races which also cover many kilometres is that you eat a rich breakfast and then spend many hours on the bike. Obviously you miss lunch. After the race you try to make up the calories and fill yourself up. In these circumstances, the body is actually not that hungry after such strenuous exercise. Accordingly, it is nice to have rice pudding or a fruit salad straight away in the bus on the way back to the hotel, something light, in other words.
In the evenings there are then foods which are very high in carbohydrates such as pasta. A steak always goes down well. You do not have to start combining foods or anything. In the evenings you can have from 2000 to 3000 calories, which you simply wouldn’t do otherwise. But during the race you have burnt off a lot of calories. So you can also have a high intake.
What do you have for breakfast?
I prefer to have a rich breakfast: bread rolls, toast or even bread with chocolate spread and a banana. Mostly, though, I tend to stick to Muesli. It always depends on how much I weigh at the time. I eat more or less for breakfast depending on my weight.
Cycling keeps you fit and slim – what foods can help with that?
Yoghurt.
What would you advise recreational cyclists in terms of diet and keeping fit?
A basic rule which I have stuck to for years now is: if you ride a lot of kilometres a day you can eat a lot too. If you don’t ride much, you should watch what you eat. If you don’t cycle at all, you are better off going to bed hungry.
What snacks do you recommend people take with them?
Particularly light snacks and something to drink.
What do you do to balance out your work?
I play golf with Rolf Aldag from time to time. But that is really just for fun. If one of us talks during a tee-off, there is no penalty. As far as handicaps go, there’s not much in it. We both have a handicap of 30.
What is your favourite Milram product?
Milram’s spring quark, because it tastes best.
